Social Life and Customs in Rural America:
1940's & 1950's
This interactive program fosters an awareness
of -
and appreciation for -
contributions of everyday Americans to the fabric of our country.
Like the book from which it was adapted, Soul Stirrings, each
program provides a factual, personal, accounting of what everyday living
was like as an African American growing up in Mississippi during the
1940’s and ‘50’s through the prism of
topical events of the period.
Program elements capture accomplishments of the sometimes
unheralded heroes in our personal history
in an attempt to show that excellence can be achieved by each of
us, despite our circumstance, the region of our country we call home, or
our socio-economic status.
Through interactive dialogue, participants become aware that many of
their ancestors were steeped in high morals, family values, work ethic,
and an overwhelming sense of the importance of education for the next
generation.
