What this Study Guide is About

This easy to follow Study Guide was developed with the assistance of a classroom teacher with over thirty (30) years teaching experience and a MED degree from Tuskegee University. Its tools and other resources help classroom teachers and parents  bring the history and social life and customs of rural Wilkinson County, Mississippi during the 1940’s and ‘50’s to life.   It contains over 150 questions and a number of other learning tools (i.e. puzzles, suggested activities) that enhance based stories from the book, Soul Stirrings. Answers (for teachers) are provided for all but thought questions in order to facilitate classroom discussion.

This history is of particular importance because experiences throughout rural America mirror much that is represented in Soul Stirrings.  For many Black Americans, this will be the first time they have seen their own past chronicled.

Specifically, students who are exposed to programs included in this Guide will improve and/or develop the following:

 ·        Reading

 ·        Writing

·         Storytelling

 ·        Self Esteem

 ·        Awareness of cultural differences among regions within the United States.  Promotes understanding of and appreciation for differences among people in general.

 ·        Enhance sense of own potential.

 ·       Enhance critical thinking skills

 ·        Importance of America’s contribution to the world’s food supply

 ·      Knowledge of regional American history

 Target Audiences:

The message in Soul Stirrings is applicable to all age groups.  This manual is structured for grades 4-12.  Although we have recommended grade levels for each set of questions, teachers can choose questions applicable to their grade from those presented.
